Community groups wow crowds

Carnival celebrations kicked off from Great Western Road, North Paddington, on Sunday with children dressed up in brightly-coloured costumes following floats.

The junior carnival king of Elimu Paddington Arts, in Woodfield Road, North Paddington, was 12-year-old Theo Calvin, who has spent four years in the role. Before the event, he said: "I'm a mixture of nervous and excited, but really looking forward to dancing along the carnival route."

Amber Neckles, 6, also of Paddington Arts, added: "I went to carnival in Trinidad earlier this year, which was quite different to here because it was really nice and sunny. I'm nervous because normally I don't like dancing in front of people."

Other community groups put on an impressive display, including Yaa Asantewaa, in Chippenham Mews, and Flamboyan, in Fernhead Road, both in North Paddington. North Kensington's Fox Carnival Band and the Ruff Diamond dance group also performed.
