Diabetic man scoops award
A diabetic patient has picked up an award to honour his 50 year fight against the disease.
Roger Westman, 69, who has been a patient at St Mary's hospital, in Praed Street, Paddington for 50 years, scooped the Alan Nabarro medal from Diabetes UK.
He has to inject himself with insulin four times a day to help control his blood sugar lebels.
Mr Westman said: "I've worked very hard to look after myself over the years, so receiving this medal is quite an achievement and an honour.
"I've not let diabetes stop me from doing the things I want to do. People who have just been diagnosed shouldn't worry, it's manageable, you just have to adapt."
He added that since he was diagnosed, treatment has improved and the needles are thinner to cause less pain and scarring to the skin.
The medal is given to remember Alan Nabarro, a man who was given six months to live when he was diagnosed in 1922, but lived for another 50 years after insulin was discovered.
Around 230 people receive the medal every year.
