Extra police to patrol Bayswater
Extra police patrols, homework clubs and additional sports for young people are on the cards for residents living in Bayswater.
A total of £27,000 will be spent on two extra police officers in Lancaster Gate ward to patrol streets across the ward every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8pm until 1am to deter trouble.
Young people will also be encouraged to take up more sport with £2,500 being spent on additional sports activities in the area.
Free weekly sports clubs are now available for young people including football classes every Monday evening at Westminster Academy, in Harrow Road Westbourne Green, and wall climbing classes every Wednesday at the Westway Centre, in Crowthorne Road, North Kensington.
A total of £5,000 has also been allocated to fund a weekly 'homework club' held every Friday in the Hallfield Estate. The money will help pay for tutors, outreach workers and venue hire.
The projects are being funded by the council's Neighbourhoods Programme, where each ward is allocated £100,000 for local councillors to spend on local projects.
Westminster Council's cabinet member for customers and neighbourhoods Cllr Audrey Lewis said: "The ward budgets are a great way to enable councillors to have the means to involve people in improving their own neighbourhoods and allows them the independence to shape their own priorities for their specific area.
"Residents in Lancaster Gate can now benefit from a raft of projects aimed at improving quality of life, providing a reassuring police presence on the streets and clubs where children of all ages can develop their skills and meet new people."
Older residents in the ward are also set to benefit from the neighbourhood fund, with over £11,000 allocated for lunch clubs.
These clubs, which will be located in various easy-to-reach areas across Lancaster Gate, will give elderly residents the chance to meet and socialise in their local area.
A quarter of the fund (£25,000) will also be invested in the Queensway/Westbourne Grove Business Improvement District (BID) in a joint decision with Westminster's Bayswater ward.
The BID works to regenerate the area around Queensway and Westbourne Grove.
