Honorary Alderman of Westminster
A ceremony to mark Sir Simon Milton becoming an Honorary Alderman of the City of Westminster took place at Westminster City Hall on Friday.
The former council leader was made an Honourary Alderman for his service to the city as a councillor in Lancaster Gate ward, over a period of 20 years.
Westminster mayor Cllr Louise Hyams presented a scroll to mark the honour to Sir Simon, who received huge applause from colleagues old and new, including the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.
Cllr Hyams, said: "I am very pleased to be able to present this honour to Sir Simon whose dedication and achievements during his time at Westminster City Council are without parallel.
"While his recent departure from Westminster Council to take up his post as Deputy Mayor for Policy and Planning at the Greater London Authority, has been a loss for us, his vision will remain an asset to the people of London."
Westminster Council leader Cllr Colin Barrow added: "Simon is the best civic leader of his generation and served he council with distinction for 20 years; this honour is thoroughly deserved."
Only four other people have ever received this title.
