Handyman starts work in Queen's Park
The bugbear of fixing leaking taps, broken locks and dodgy doors may soon by lifted from some elderly and disabled Westminster residents after the recruitment of a dedicated handyman.
New Zealand-born Rob Mantz will carry out small jobs for free to all eligible residents in the Queen's Park and Harrow Road wards, although he will charge for materials worth more than £50.
Mr Mantz, 44, a keen cyclist and musician who plays the didgeridoo, said: "Changing a lightbulb or fixing a loose carpet might sound like simple tasks but the older you get the harder it can be to climb ladders or bend down.
"I'm pleased I've got this opportunity to make people's lives a little bit easier."
Mr Mantz's diary is fast filling up, with almost 50 residents asking for his help.
His handyman skills cover a range of small jobs, but do not extend to decorating, gardening, work on gas appliances or repairs of household appliances.
The scheme is open to residents aged 60 or over or to those who are receiving disability allowance.
Residents who wish to book an appointment with Rob can contact Westminster Council's Home Improvement Agency on 020 7641 8959.
