Marylebone fire station to become hotel
A former Marylebone fire station which has lain empty for years is to be turned into a luxury hotel.
The grade-II listed Manchester Square fire station was used as a fire station from 1889 to 2005, when the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority disposed of the building.
Plans for the site, owned by Portman Estate, including a 33-room hotel in Chiltern Street were given the go-ahead by Westminster Council's planning committee last Thursday.
The plans also include an upmarket restaurant, bar and gallery space.
Chairman of Westminster Council's planning applications sub-committee Cllr Robert Davis said: "My committee granted permission for a new 33 bedroom luxury hotel to be created in Marylebone because we feel that it will see this beautiful building brought back into public use.
"We welcome the developers' plans to restore this historic Grade II fire station and are pleased that they will be respecting the building's quirky and historic design in their plans."
He added: "We are happy to see the building made into a venue local people can be proud of with many of its features set to be restored, and we are especially pleased that the original doors and the special light outside the fire station will be reinstated.
"A series of major new hotels are planned for Westminster, particularly at the top end of the market, so that come 2012 there will be even more top of the range rooms available in the heart of the capital which will be vital for our tourism industry and its role in the economy."
