Westminster's volunteer of the year

A St John's Wood woman was celebrating after winning Westminster's volunteer of the year award.

Caroline Dines, 49, received the accolade in recognition of the 20 years essential administration support she has given to Volunteer Centre Westminster, in Praed Street, Paddington.

As well as carrying out the vital office work needed to ensure the smooth running of the centre, Caroline plays an active role in a number of schemes run by the centre's disabilities project and is described by her colleagues as an enthusiastic member of the team.

Caroline, who is the centre's longest serving volunteer, said the award came as a complete surprise: "The work I do with the Volunteer Centre and the delight I get from seeing how many people the service helps is more than enough of an award for me

"I look forward to volunteering for another 20 years."

This is the first year the award has been run and it is hoped it will become an annual event to mark National volunteers' week and acknowledge the important role volunteers play across the city.

Westminster council's cabinet member for customer service and communities Cllr Lee Rowley said: "I suspect there are dozens of people in Westminster like Caroline that are making a major difference to the lives of others in their communities and these awards are a small step in highlighting that important and often essential contribution."
