New trauma centre for Paddington hospital

Posted by Juliet Eysenck on Jul 21, 09 11:48 AM in Health

A world-class specialist centre for major trauma is to be based at a Paddington hospital, it was announced last night.

St Mary's Hospital, in Praed Street, was selected to provide life-saving emergency care to Londoners, following a public consultation by Healthcare for London (HfL).

The major trauma centre at St Mary's will be one of four across London, which are expected to save around 500 lives a year.

Charing Cross Hospital, in Fulham Palace Road, Hammersmith, was selected to provide a hyper-acute stroke unit (HASU) to complement the existing stroke unit.

Claire Perry, managing director of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs both hospitals, said: "I'm absolutely delighted that the Trust has been selected by Healthcare for London to provide a major trauma centre at St Mary's and a hyper-acute stroke unit at Charing Cross and I'd like to give my sincere thanks to all those involved to date."

Both hospitals will continue to have their own emergency department, and Charing Cross Hospital will continue to provide trauma services.

We'd like to hear from you.
