Budding Maida Vale gardeners hope for award

Tube staff at Maida Vale have got their trowels out in the hope of winning a gardening competition.

This is the first year the tube station has been entered into Underground in Bloom, pitting its garden against contenders including Bayswater and Edgware Road tube stations.

Maida Vale customer service assistant Warren James entered the station into the competition.

He put up a sign in the ticket hall about the station's entry which, under the title 'Come on Maida Vale', asked customers to donate plants and flowers to help them win.

The keen gardener said the response from the community was overwhelming.

He added: "More and more people keep asking if they can donate to the station garden, even though the judging is now over.

"I think it's because, since the station upgrade, this is the best thing that has happened to lift the look of the station.

"This has been a real community effort, even the station cleaners have helped me water the plants.

"Hopefully all our hard work will be worth it, though I do feel that us working together is a win in itself."

Based on the work of passengers and station staff, Maida Vale could be a strong contender for the best tubs, best hanging baskets and best newcomer categories.

The results of the competition will be revealed on September 10.
