Government GCSE target smashed by Westbourne Green pupils

Pupils at a Westbourne Green school were celebrating after smashing government GCSE targets.

This year, 38 per cent of students at Westminster Academy, in Harrow Road, achieved five or more GCSEs at grade A* to C, which has more than doubled since 17 per cent were awarded the same grades last year.

The government's National Challenge GCSE target is set at 30 per cent of pupils to achieve such good grades.

Jafrin Islam, 16, was just one of the school's success stories as she picked up six A* GCSE grades - in sociology, maths, science, additional science, business and psychology, and two Bs in English language and critical thinking.

The hard-working pupils also notched up two BTECs at distinction* level in dance, and two BTECs at distinction* level in business.

"I'm really happy with my results," she said.

"Hopefully I'll stay on at school next year to study for the International Baccalaureate, and after that I'd like to go to university, maybe to study medicine."

Other pleased pupils included Adewunmi Agunbiade, 16, who was awarded five Bs and two Cs, giving him good enough grades to stay on at the school next year.

"Long term, I would like to go into IT software development," he said.

The keen student has already fixed up a work placement at computer company IBM next summer, to gain some valuable work experience.

Shakib Ahmadi, 16, was delighted when he found out his hard work had paid off.
He picked up three A grades and one B at GCSE level, and two BTECs at distinction A* level.

"I was really pleased with my A in English literature," he said. "I really didn't think I'd get above a C."

Principal Smita Bora said: "These results show that the confidence I have in Westminster Academy's amazing staff, students and community is well-deserved.
"I would like to thank everybody for working so incredibly hard in achieving this tremendous improvement."

We'd like to hear from you.
