Lisson Grove community celebrates achievements

More than 1,000 people attended a Great Communities Day held in Lisson Grove on Saturday.

The threat of rain did not dampen spirits of those who came out on the Lisson Green Estate, in Lilestone Street, to celebrate the achievements of the community.

The diversity of Westminster was well represented with a performance from a Bangladeshi singing group, a traditional Filipino dance presentation, an all-day French parkour workshop and several international food stalls.

The day, organised by Westminster Council's housing arm CityWest Homes, culminated in the presentation of the Great Communities Award for a resident who provided outstanding service within the Westminster community.

Presented by deputy Westminster mayor Dr Cyril Nemeth, Mohamed Taleouine took the award for his extensive work with the Westminster Arabic community and was given £300 to spend on something which would benefit the local community.

Rose Doyle and Angelique Pallance were awarded joint runner-up positions, both receiving £100 pounds for their local communities.

Stan Brown also received a special achievement award for his many years of representing residents in Westminster

CityWest Homes' director of customer services Darren Levy said: "We are absolutely delighted that so many Westminster residents attended this event.

"This was truly an event for all ages.

"It was a terrific success and I would particularly like to thank the residents, volunteers and our partners at the Lisson Green estate who all played such an integral part in making this day the spectacular event it proved to be."

See this week's Paddington, Marylebone and Pimlico Mercury, out tomorrow, for pictures of the event.

We'd like to hear from you.
