Maida Vale busker hopes to win music prize
A first-time busker is hoping to be crowned one of the best in London.
Eric Lajoie, 24, who lives in Maida Vale, entered a competition to win a 20-minute slot playing to an appreciative audience of commuters at Marble Arch tube station, despite not having busked before.
Now he will go up against 19 other buskers fighting for the chance to be named one of the best in London, as part of London mayor Boris Johnson's Rhythm of London Busking Underground competition.
"It was one of the best experiences of my life; it was phenomenal," said Mr Lajoie.
"I couldn't sleep the night after I came back because I was just so happy to have done it."
"Playing in front of people I know, like my friends and family, is a bit more scary because I'm worried about their opinion a lot more.
"When I played in front of strangers I was still a bit nervous, but some gave me a smile or a nod so I knew I wasn't that bad.
"A couple of people also started to put money by my feet, but I wasn't allowed to accept it as part of the competition rules so I ended up having to give it back to them.
"A couple were quite confused and said, 'I really like the song, I just want to give you some money', but I couldn't take it."
Mr Lajoie has been playing guitar and singing for six years, and now hopes to form a band with some friends.
The 20 buskers left in the competition, aged between 16 to 25, will be whittled down to 10 following a public online vote.
These 10 will then be given the chance to perform at a Busk Off on September 17.
The best three will win prizes including a year's licence to perform on the underground, a new acoustic guitar, and a Fender bass guitar signed by legendary musician Sting.
London mayor Borish Johnson said: "London is known around the world for the fantastic music produced here and there young musicians show our city is bubbling with talent.
"Let's champion and encourage the capital's aspiring musicians. Come on Londoners, get your votes in."
