Revamp of Queen's Park library learning centre
A fresh lick of paint has brightened up part of the Queen's Park library.
On Thursday, the newly-refurbished Queen's Park learning centre, in Fourth Avenue, was officially unveiled by local author and journalist Melissa Benn, daughter of politician Sir Anthony Wedgwood Benn.
The new look includes a general revamp, as well as seven new computers with equipment such as photocopiers, scanners and laminators.
The centre provides a much-needed resource for the Queen's Park community, offering a range of courses including IT, numeracy and literacy, employment advice sessions, as well as reading groups and after school clubs.
In the afternoons, the centre offers assisted learning, for people to use the computers with a number of staff members available to answer any questions about using them.
Nicholas Alexander, learning support librarian, said: "The building dates back to the 1870s, with nice big windows upstairs, so the centre was just in need of a bit of paint to brighten it up.
"We hope to have a lot more people coming down here to use the facilities now.
"The new-look centre has actually been open for about a month now, and since then we've seen numbers grow from about 20 people a day up towards 100 people a day, which is great.
"A lot of people come here for the classes we offer, but others simply come down just to use the computers."
The centre's opening hours were extended to 9.30am to 3.30pm, and 6pm to 7pm, on weekdays, and 9.30am to 4.50pm on Saturdays.
