Intergenerational Christmas in Bayswater

Young and old enjoyed afternoon tea and gifts thanks to a clever idea from Bayswater pupils.

Pupils from Hallfield Junior School, in Bishop's Bridge Road, arranged a festive celebration with the Bayswater estate office run by Westminster Council's housing arm CityWest Homes.

Teacher Sue Mitchell said: "The students in the school council came up with the idea to do something for the community, and because the school is on the estate, it seemed a good idea to do something for the elderly residents this Christmas.

"Each school councillor collected money from their classmates, bought the gifts, wrapped them and made the cards."

Twelve elderly residents from the estate benefitted from the children's generosity, while the children, who ranged in age from eight to 10, were treated to cakes, biscuits and some sage advice from their elders.

Mrs Patching, wearing a special festive waistcoat for the occasion, has lived on the estate for 50 years.

She said, "It is a lovely idea.

"My twin boys and daughter attended the school.

"Some of the children asked me what year I was born in and whether TV was invented then."

Inside the gifts were winter warmers - a scarf, hat and glove set plus a Christmas pudding and cake.

Rose Cleary, chairwoman of the Hallfield residents association, whose children also went to the school was impressed with the enthusiastic response from the kids.

The event took place on December 16.
