Mural unveiled in North Paddington

An 'eyesore' North Paddington wall has been transformed with a beautiful mural.

The 10-metre wide painting, based on the theme 'transformation', was revealed on a wall by the Elgin Estate, in Harrow Road, last night.

The picture was painted by artists Bleach, Busk and Zadok from the 3lsewhere Collective, and was unveiled by young WECH (Walterton and Elgin Community Homes) residents.

Since 2007, the Harrow Road Neighbourhood Partnership has worked to place a community mural on the gable wall of Westminster Drug Project, which faces into the Elgin Estate.

This involved six workshops, where the urban artists worked with young people to develop the theme and features of the mural.

Residents in the WECH housing blocks nearest to the painting had complained that the wall was an eyesore, but now believe the mural has transformed the space.

Andy Watson, chief executive of WECH, said: "This beautiful mural, which really brightens up the Harrow Road, demonstrates the benefits of sharing ideas and working together.

"The artists have really captured the sense that things are getting better in the area and that by going forward together we can make Harrow Road a happy place where people want to live and work."

The project was funded by NHS Westminster, WECH and the Harrow Road ward councillors' budget from Westminster Council.
