Paddington woman wins award for donating blood
A Paddington woman has picked up an award after donating enough blood to save more than 225 lives.
Deidre Skinner, of Chilworth Street, was among 156 dedicated blood donors honoured by the National Blood Service at the Donor Awards Ceremony.
The altruistic woman received a crystal plate, in recognition of the 76 times she has donated blood and each of those blood donations can potentially save the lives of up to three people.
A further 32 lifesavers were commended for reaching the milestone of 100 blood donations, and five were honoured for their commitment to platelet donation.
John Canning, lead donor relations manager, said: "Only three per cent of donors reach their 75th donations, while less than one per cent make it to 100 donations.
"We are proud to reward these incredible people, these silent heroes, who have rolled up their sleeves so many times over the years to help save lives.
"Due to Christmas falling on a Friday, there was a reduction in the number of blood donor sessions taking place over the two-week period; six full days and two half days instead of the usual ten days.
"So we really hope more people will follow their example and ensure good blood stocks over the holidays."
The donors were personally congratulated at the event by guest speak Sarah Thompson, a teacher and life coach who was diagnosed with leukaemia in May 2004.
Over a two year period, she had a number of chemotherapy sessions and had a life-saving stem cell transplant in 2006.
She spoke about how blood donors and a stem cell donor helped her beat leukaemia, allowing her to get married and live a normal life.
Anyone aged between 17 and 65, weighing more than 50kg and in general good health can become a donor.
